" I have a buyer for your De Havilland," she said ,leaning smugly against my seaplane. I wanted to push her into the drink right then but I controlled myself. This was my baby. It had made a living for me for the last ten years and now it had to go. I ran tourists out to the Dry Tortugas and back nearly every day for a decade. People think the Florida Keys end where US 1 stops but that's not true. There is so much more to see but you need me and my seaplane to see it. I made myself focus on Maggie's sun tanned face. "I'm still trying to find another way out of this problem." I answered . "Hold off for a few more days will you?" Maggie grimaced,"Toby you have got to face facts ,you have to get that operation or you won't be able to see how to fly anything in a few more years." It was ironic. If I didn't get the operation on my eyes I would not be able to fly and If I did get it I would have to sell my plane to pay for it. There was only one other possibility...my brother. Jeffrey was an entrepreneur which was a euphemism for drug dealer. We had long ago gone our separate ways. I didn't even know how to find him anymore. "Maggie, I said, you have a lot of contacts, could you help me find my half brother Jeff?" She was not happy about the idea of losing the commission on the seaplane but we were pals so she agreed to help find Jeff. We arranged to talk again in a few days. I dreaded the call because I knew Jeff would try to get me to use my plane to make a drug drop . He would be all about how quickly I could have the cash for the operation and keep my plane . On Saturday I got the call from Maggie. At first she was very quiet and then she said, "Toby,I have good news and bad news. The bad news is your brother died a week ago. The good news is ,,,he left you two million dollars. |
