Exploring Erotica...for yourself or your art?

This subject arises over and over as our membership continues to grow and explore this "forbidden" realm of erotica. What's too much? What's not?

I started down the dark path of writing sex about ten years ago when I picked up my first Stephanie Laurens novel at the grocery store. Some of the cliches apply...I'm a wife. I was bored...of my fantasy authors! LOL I had no idea what I was going to be reading, but it would be different, I knew. There was a lovely picture on the front of a carriage and four and the blurb promised a rakish earl and a spunky heroine falling in love. I shrugged and took it home. NOw, this is "romance" in that book.

I couldn't believe it! The tension. The hurried coupling in the stable, an afternoon spent in a library as she studied a branch out the window with his hands in all the "wrong" places (that scene still gets me). The building of a relationship through the act of sex, and thus love. I blushed. I read on. I finished the book. I wanted more! And I proceeded to buy more.

After finishing somewhere around the 100th historical romance title, I began to wonder. Was it all about the sex? Was that the only thing that made these books work? I'd learned more about myself and the way I personally viewed sex during this research...but I still had to wonder. Did the book have to run on sexual tension, so much?

So, I wrote my first novel. "An Accomplished Lady". No sex. None. A couple kisses. I did it! The reviews come back with one word in common...it's kind of odd, really. Passionate. I didn't show anybody anything...not even the kisses!

And then I was told about the erotica market. I've read my share with the hubby on a cold night. But who knew it was the hottest thing selling right now? Did I dare?

There's no doubt about it. Narrating a sex scene, opening your eyes and feeling each moment is an enlightening process. It's really rather wonderful. I've discovered that sex is an amazing part of being human. It connects every person on the planet...and through time. This is the one thing we all have in common. And yet, we've all been taught to keep that most instinctive part of us locked up, hidden from our neighbors. Why? Is there a good reason?

I can't think of one.

It's scary the first few times you open the doors to the bedroom in your mind. And then it's a revelation. NOTHING that happens behind that door hasn't been tried in another time, in another bedroom, with another partner. It's really OK. In fact...it's deliriously marvelous.

I've had a wonderful time discovering passion in my writing...and in my life. If you're shy, that's cool. But don't hold yourself back because of what you fear others might think...that is a path down frustration. In this arena, honest human interaction is the key. I hope you enjoy your time spent delving into this most precious part of yourself.
