Hiya everyone ![]() In my last job, I worked for a company that made safe rooms and sleepsystems for children and adults with, amongst others, Autism, Asperger syndrome, learning difficulties, behavioural difficulties as well as Epilepsy, Cerebral Palsy and some life threathening illnesses. At that time, I didn't know much about any of it. Part of my job was to discuss with parents and carers the individual needs of the clients, in order to design the solution for them. I soon learned that what carers and parents needed most of all was to simply talk. They were often at their wit's end. I started reading up and asking questions. Sometimes, I would travel around the country to put the products in place, and got to meet the clients and their parents and carers. Not always easy. I do admit that sometimes I felt quite emotional afterwards. At one point I was asked to make some music for children with Autism, which took a whole lot of research but the feedback has been great. Again, I learned a lot through that. As my understanding grew, I started to understand more about my uncle. He used to headbang a lot as a child, and everything has to be just so - he is incredibly stuck to his routines and any variation to it upsets him. He also has problems communicating unless he really, really knows someone - and even then it can be difficult. Although I stated I have learned a lot, I would love to know more. I think that what I know is probably nothing compared to the experience of others. ** Image ID #1058677 Unavailable ** |
