Realism in characters is a must. This is still mostly a romance genre, so your readers want to connect to the characters. In my erotica works I have had a just 18 healer who is magically bonded with an evil mage. Let's see...a tiny abused whore that links with a massive kindly blacksmith and an almost 40, overweight woman finding romance and self-worth with her best-friend and boss.

Do you see the 'standard' blonde bombshell in any of those? No, and you won't in my work. Sex is the universal language...thus anybody on the planet understands what you are talking about. As to what will ignite their imaginations? *shrug* Take your best bet...if it speaks to you, it'll be good.
