Well, that answers some of my questions. All fine and good, but I still have to agree with Carol that bringing in characters like Hitler to put our characters up against will scare off the audience that EC has in place.

I suggest a slight tweaking of Valen's chapter to take the focus away from these named evil-doers. Perhaps a collection of unnamed pets could replace them...it will still allow us to follow our creative ideas. The reader will want to like Valen--in a "I can't look the other way" manner, as he is the focal character. We need to give them a reason to do so.
