Merrijane, your response is most helpful. I also spoke with my stepfather, taking care not to name names, and passed his advice on to my friend. As it turns out, excommunication is a blessing for him and she's speaking with her parents about urging him to talk to the bishop. Excommunication would release him from his baptismal covenants. Besides, if he does choose to overcome this and succeeds, being rebaptized will wash it all away. Anyway, his self-worth is totally shot. He suddenly started doing everything the Church warned against, drinking, swearing, partying and everything else, short of doing anything illegal. It was baffling all of us, because he's not one to give in to peer pressure and he's always been adamant that such things are stupid. When he made his confession, it suddenly made sense. But, he still has the testimony, and I think that's the hardest thing for him right now, knowing the Church is true and trying to cope with feelings the Church does not support. |
