I've never understood why being second best is so celebrated. I suppose it's because most of us never get to be the best, so we'd rather applaud a loser that came close than a winner that dominated. We always love and respect the underdog so much.
I'm reminded of the Little League team I coached to 21 straight victories. When another team finally beat us, everyone celebrated their upset and never bothered to pat us all on the back for being the absolute best for so long. I suspect it all comes back to jealousy.
