In my humble opinion, one of the better historical fiction pieces ever written (and a romance, at that) is Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott. The story is set during the rule of King Richard I of England, and uses several time period plot devices, including issues surrounding the Crusades, Templars (Bois-Guilbert), the long running fued between the Normans and Saxons, and the European persecution of the Jews.

Migh be worth a look in order to see how Scott, a master storyteller, approached the genre.
