City Sorrows

It had been so long...
He entered the city
The skyscrapers loomed like the behemoths they were
The morning sun reflected on their mile-high windows
The city has changed, he thought
He walked

The market
The cries of merchants flooded his ears
They were joined by the sound of dropped change
Children screamed for things they couldn't have
He walked

Signs, posters, billboards
Eat at Joe's they said
He did
His tongue was burned
He walked

Downtown
Shining buldings and fancy cars blinded him
Wealth everywhere on the streets
There was no wealth in their homes
He walked

The wrong side of the tracks
Anger everywhere
Distrust in people's eyes
Hardened hearts on every corner
His soul ached
He walked

The train station
He could feel it coming as the platform rumbled
Hearing the whistle, his heart leaped
He was glad to be gone again
The city had not changed
