Hi, Kristina,

For a children's book, yeaaaaah, that does sound a little too wordy and flowery indeed. Sometimes keeping things short and sweet is best.

As for using the names of real life folks in the story, maybe someone else is more versed in this than I am, but I don't think it's a problem especially if you're not slandering or defaming the characters.
