Invented by Valerie Peterson Brown, the Trolaan consists of four quatrains (four line stanzas) with all lines of each stanza beginning with the same letter and an end-rhyme scheme of abab. The poet is free to select the beginning letter for the first stanza, but each subsequent stanza must begin with the second letter in the first line of the previous stanza, as described and demonstrated in the following links:
