A Tribute to Some of the Veterans I Have Known

I remembered you today
in your green army fatigues
when you came home from Vietnam.

I remembered you today
your face was a colleague
of every veteran I have known:

I remembered you,
with the face of Grand Uncle Roy
who refused to talk about mustard gas in France;

I remembered you,
with the face of my father
who served at Roswell in World War II;

I remember you,
with the face of John
who wrote poems about Vietnam.
