Seasonal Decorations

         A lot of people don't decorate, except maybe a wreath on the door. But teachers and people with small children tend to keep the calendar in their home decor. At my house, the red, white and blue table cloth, used Memorial Day through Labor Day, has been replaced with an orange cloth. The pumpkin salt and pepper shakers and little scarecrows are on the table. Fall colors are on the mantel. A skeleton hangs on the door to the garage.

         When the kids are here, I have "Boo" place mats and bat straws. A tiny ghost hangs in the living room. A ceramic jack o'lantern sits on the table out of reach of little hands. Dad will put the big scarecrows out in the entry way next way (no porch, just a covered entrance) with a real looking crow.

         After Halloween, we'll have turkeys and pilgrims. The jack o'lanterns and ghost will be put away. The table cloth will be beige with tiny leaves on it. The scare crows actually still fit in with the harvest theme. If I survive Black Friday (it gets harder as you age and you work that day), we switch to Christmas.

         Other holidays aren't as easy. We try to put out some green for St. Patrick's. I use a red table cloth for Valentine's. Easter is just flowers. If I get really creative, we might celebrate one of the birthday's as a luau.

         I think I would do it even without kids or other visitors. It makes me feel more festive. You have to clean any way, why not jazz it up?
