"Isolation" (Poetry/Day 20)

Isolation

Strong in my youth, I stood alone
and faced up to the world unbowed.
Independent, my self esteem grew.
I knew I stood out from the crowd.

I reveled in my liberty
and claimed that the world was mine.
I never saw it as my ego,
just part of a greater design.

Yet as I enter my winter years,
I see the folly of my ways.
The walls that I built around me
now only stand in my way.

Isolation isn't freedom ...
it's just another word for alone.
