A little late getting the news...

Today I read that Bob Dylan turned 70 on May 24th. Now I really feel old. I was never a very big fan of Bob Dylan personally, but I did and still do like the tunes he wrote, especially the ones made famous by Peter, Paul, and Mary. Blowin' in the Wind, Don't Think Twice, It's All Right, Too Much of Nothing, and The Times They Are A Changin'...just to name the most well known.

It made me think back to the Spring of 1962 when I was a Freshman at the U. of Delaware. Peter, Paul, and Mary were almost unknown, fresh from Greenwich Village. But they were well-known to me and my peers at school and when the news broke that they were coming to perform at Carpenter Field House, I would have stood on my head for three hours to get (free) tickets, if I had to. The night of their performance was cold but we, my roommate and two other dorm friends, walked through the dark and chilly night air from Harrington Dorm to Carpenter Field House, at that time the farthest distance apart between two points on campus. Tingling with excitement, we never felt the low temperature or noticed the lengthy walk. The fieldhouse was packed with floor to ceiling bleachered students, all of them as excited as we were. What a performance they gave...two guys and a beautiful girl with long blonde hair. I must have been entranced because I have no memory at all of the walk back to Harrington Hall. Mary passed away last year, but she will live loud and clear in my memory until I am also gone from this earth. RIP Mary Travers.
