Day to day stuff....a memoir without order. |
Our weatherman just said 28 degrees by 7 A.M. tomorow morning. I am not ready....brrrr. Thank heavens I don't have to go anywhere tomorrow. I cannot believe it. I ordered three gifts last weekend over the net (all free shipping) and one came today! Wow! That is great service. I shall never visit the Mall again. The last time I was at the library, I was browsing the sewing books while waiting for my favorite category, drawing. Another lady was looking at those. I didn't want to interrupt. She was actually carrying on a conversation with herself...hmmm, I wonder what that was about. (I guess sort of like what I am doing here...lol.) Anyway, in the sewing books, I pulled out one called "A is for Aprons" and inside were 100's of color pictures of old fashioned aprons, the kind my grandmom used to make. I called her "mom" and my mother "mommy", we were all close. When Mom passed away in 1980, my Uncle Johnny (with whom she lived) gave me her treadle Singer sewing machine. I looked it up on the web and have the "born on" date for it from the serial number, 1903. Anyway, I thought to myself, wouldn't it be great to make one of the aprons like Mom used to make on her sewing machine...actually make it on the old treadle machine. It still works, there are new needles in one of the drawers, but the belt is in very bad shape, so I may have to try to find a new belt, but I just think that would be so great...like I was communing with Mom. She made some of her aprons out of feed bags, which I am sure do not exist anymore, and she used to make the most beautiful rag rugs. Wish I had paid more attention. Everytime I dust the Singer machine, I have to just press my hands on it and think about touching her dna. I hope I'm not getting senile.... I'm trying it and will let you know how it goes. When my Uncle Johnny passed away a few years ago, my Aunt Sadie gave me an old trunk that he stored things in. I actually found a written receipt in it that my Pop-pop had signed for after buying some kind of grain. It was dated in 1897. I was so excited looking through that trunk, it had old photo albums, pen knives, watches, jewelry, a really old family Bible.... Do others get as excited as I do over something like that. I wonder what will happen to those things when I am gone? But I have had unimaginable enjoyment from them. until next time....c |
