Scratching
Prompts day 11: Story to include the phrase “what was that?”

“What was that?” He sat up in bed.

“What?” She turned over.

“I heard a scratching at the door. Someone's trying to get in!”

He jumped up, grabbed his gun and headed for the living room.

“Don't do anything foolish!” She called after him.

“I'm protecting us from intruders!”

He stood by the door, listening. The scratching grew more insistent, as if whoever was there was determined to claw through. He raised his weapon and fired three shots.

Silence ensued.

“You fool, you probably killed somebody.”

“I wasn't aiming…” He pulled the door open.

An orange tabby sat, staring.

“Meow!”

Words: 100.
