Cleave the Sparrow

Cleave the Sparrow by Johnathan Katz is a confusing but also hilarious novel of philosophy.

The narrator is an unassuming guy named Tom Small who falls in with a group of strange people living in a cave in Asia. The leader is a guy named Crick who has a plan for building a device which I think was supposed to be a time machine. The plan involves getting elected president and then committing suicide. This leads to Tom becoming President.

Tom then finds himself at odds with Arab terrorists who want the device. Eventually, Tom uses the device to travel and I think a nuclear Armageddon occurs. There are also references to Superman.

The story pauses several times to give us speculations about the nature of time and reality. This may sound like a difficult read, but it really isn't, partly because Tom Small is grounded in reality with a self-deprecating sense of humor. He is both sympathetic and fun to read about.
