The Bridge

Hidden in the thick and dusky
colorless moments before dawn
before the light reached our eyes
our hearts ran free
over the Schillingbrücke
over the captive river Spree
Hope was just on our horizon
waiting to break forth
once the match was struck
liberty would be a consuming fire
erasing the bonds of history
but we were caught
in the colorless years
behind the wall
