A blog of no uncertain musings. What goes on in my mind is often a source of wonder to me. |

And then there were ... 0 Young Adult was the final genre of my personal and self-imposed Genre Reviewing Activity, which began on December 18 (Action/Adventure) and ended today. For the most part I completed one review each day, though some days I did two. I also reviewed 96 different members on this journey. I kept a spreadsheet of all the reviews, primarily so I didn't miss a genre. I tracked the review number, the item reviewed, the author, the review length, and the number of listings displayed for that particular genre under Browse By Genre. Honestly, I was surprised at struggling with reviewing a number of the genres. Some least favorite genres included Career, Death, Fashion, Horror/Scary, LGBTQ+, Teen and Young Adult. My favorite genres were Biographical, Comedy, Erotica, Genealogy, History, How-To/Advice, Opinion and Travel. My reviews ran the gamut of members from Newbies with just a few weeks under their belt, to Staff. And everyone in between. To tell the truth, it was difficult to pass by a large number of listings--interesting stories, essays and an occasional poem--to review a member I'd not done on this journey. I'm sure we all have favorite authors we like to read and may review several items in their Portfolios. I reviewed the following members by membership level: Registered Author (including ten Newbies): 50 Preferred Author: 27 Moderators: 15 Senior Moderators: 3 Staff: 1 For shits and grins: At the time I reviewed the specific genres: The top three genre listings on the Browse By Genre menu were Emotional with 64,050; Romance/Love with 44,589; and Experience with 36,900. This activity was an interesting journey down the reviewing rabbit-hole. I read a lot of stories I would never have read otherwise. And I found a number of genres that I will no longer dismiss when choosing items to review. There were many times in this endeavor when I really didn't want to review anything in a particular genre. The most number of pages I searched for an item to review was eight. (At 25 items per page, that's a lot of items passed by.) The fewest listings were Genealogy with 279; Steampunk with 310; and Finance with 333. Only about 60% of the items I reviewed filled all three genre categories when creating or editing the items, thus limiting the number of views an item might get. Three genres = three separate lists on which the item will be displayed. Strangely, my shortest review (with 2188 characters) was of a Genealogy genre; my longest (with 4556 characters) was in the Death genre--the former being a favorite category and the latter being a least favorite. There was no rhyme or reason for my review length. Finally, I reviewed fewer than five poems ... by design. I struggle more with reviewing poetry, and while I hoped to be more discerning, I failed on that note. Also, in fairness to the number of items passed by, I had to find an item by an author I'd not reviewed. Ninety-six authors is not a big percentage compared to the Authors list of almost 100,000. But it did require some more searching as I approached the final ten to twenty genres. Would I do this again? Probably ... but not until later in the year. |
