The Windy Side of Paradise
“You should go to Greece,” they said.

“It’s wonderful this time of year,” they cried. “Surely you’ll love it, Barb!”

This is ridiculous,” I groan as yet another mighty gust of wind nearly takes off my hat and my person along with it.

It’s a miracle I’m able to hang on to the lounger; otherwise that would fly off too and I’d end up chasing it straight into the Mediterranean Sea.

At least I only have myself for company – not unless you count the lonesome yacht bobbing miserably in the distance.

I’ve yet to see anyone step onto the deck in the past hour, so my guess is they are just as bored as I am.

I steal a quick glance, behind me, where our hotel - a rather impressive building of white concrete - nestles amidst the familiar rolling hills of Santorini.

I can’t complain about the services provided so far – the staff have been excellent - but it is strange to find oneself eating in nearly empty dining halls or swimming in pools that have barely anyone loitering around.

And after my husband’s decision to try a bit of saganaki last night, he’s been an unwilling companion with the toilets. The poor dear was curled up on the bathroom floor in misery at one point.

It was he who suggested I get the fresh air – not wanting to ruin what was left of our vacation. Besides, it’s only Day Two of our week-long stay; might as well make the best of it, right?

         Ah well –

I slip on my sunglasses and lie back just as the umbrella—held down with a few nearby rocks for shade—finally gives up the fight and dances across the empty beach into oblivion.

         Sigh.

Next vacation? We’re definitely sticking close to home.
