My Writing Room When I was young, I saw a woman on TV playing a violin. It sounded so beautiful! I didn’t own any instruments. I wasn’t musical. In school we had singing lessons every week. Eventually the music teacher asked me to just pretend I was singing… She made it seem as if my wonderfulness would take away from the kids who weren’t as good! She was pretty slick! I sing like a frog. Eventually I realized it was me… I couldn’t hold a tune to save my life! It didn’t bother me though because I didn’t really like singing anyway. Plus, I often forgot the lyrics, so I didn’t blurt out the wrong words anymore either! Win, win! Well, when I saw this woman making such beautiful music by just pulling that stick back and forth, I thought that was for me! I talked my mother into letting me take lessons. Fortunately, she found a teacher who started her students on her instruments, no need to buy a violin to start! Walking in, her house was amazing. Her “Music Room” was incredible. Big windows, full of sunshine most days. Flowers everywhere, and a maze of musical instruments. It was as if her whole life was music! I wanted to live there! The lesson went differently. I hadn’t realized how much work it was to get the notes correctly. I think I thought the stick part made the music. Hey, I was ten! I did get something from her though. As an adult who writes daily, I have always had a beautiful, sun filled, flowerily room, to relax and work in. Everyone loves it! When they ask what gave me the ideas, I always say a beautiful music room. I just don’t tell them that it was also my violin failure room… |
