Cozy Fireside Romance
Growing up in West-Berlin when the winters got super cold, my favorite part of the season was to come in after a while out in the cold and make a steaming hot cup of hot cocoa. Slowly sipping it peeled out of the heavy coat and the boots kicked off, that was sweet, hot, smooth, and chocolaty bliss right there for me.
How is this romantic?
It sets the stage for the idea that the world outside can be as cold as it ever wants to be as long as there is a place to go and get warm again. Pair that up with an agreeable companion and a fire that crackles away in the fireplace and a blanked large enough to wrap two whole people into it, now that's a whole new level of comfort.
Adult characters in a romance might choose to sip on drinks that aren't made out of chocolate milk as they thaw out and snuggle in together. Tolkien made it his job to describe food and drink for whole pages in his novels. Romance writers are well within their rights to let their readers know what they consider the perfect way to warm the insides with soothing libations.
The best thing is that nobody has to have a real fireplace in their home anymore. All it takes is a TV and an hours long video of a fireplace. It's not as hot, but it's also guaranteed not messy. No ash or soot. The definition of good, clean fun.
As writers, it's our job to capture these feelings of cold and hot while pairing them with the idea of a smoldering romance. It makes for perfect fireside reading and swooning on behalf of the characters.
