Letter from the editor

Last week, my wife and I were leaving a doctor's office after her appointment. While in the elevator heading to the first floor, a stranger commented on the Writing.Com T-shirt I was wearing, asking what Writing.Com was. I own half a dozen different WDC shirts that I wear almost daily.

It had been a while since anyone asked me about WDC, and his query caught me by surprise. I had maybe 10 to 15 seconds as the elevator descended to give that man a quick synopsis of what WDC is.

I owned and operated a small woodworking shop for more than 30 years, some of which were lean years, while others were very profitable. I never succeeded in moving beyond small business status (the Small Business Administration defines a small business as having fewer than 500 employees). I decided early on to have no more than three employees, which ensured I had fewer headaches with personnel and more time to make sawdust.

My advertising needs changed over the years. Early on, I gave out business cards and brochures, I sponsored my kid's soccer team, and I used print and radio ads. The latter could be pretty expensive. As I became more established and my reputation grew, word of mouth became my go to advertising.

Word of mouth is the only advertising of Writing.Com that we members can employ. It might be interesting to conduct a poll of new members to see how they learned about Writing.Com. Did they stumble across the site while surfing one day, or did someone tell them about the site?

Many years ago, I received a packet of 50 Writing.Com business cards from the StoryMaster and StoryMistress with my name, username and WDC email address as a thank you for being a paid subscriber. They were full color, heavy duty card stock, and very attractive cards. As a businessman who had purchased business cards, I knew the value of what I had received from them. And I gave the cards out to anyone who expressed interest, though as my supply dwindled, I became more deliberate of who received them. I still have four or five left.

Do you talk about Writing.Com to strangers? Do folks see you on the WDC website at a coffeeshop and ask you about it? Perhaps they overhear your conversation with another person about your interest in writing. I realize that T-shirts are no longer available in the WDC Shop so this is not a ready avenue for discussion in public.

I would love to know if you've had any conversations with others about what WDC has meant to you, or have ideas of other ways of advertising the site. Drop me a note below; I'll be sure to share.

Thanks for spending time with me today. At the bottom of every newsletter is a section entitled:

From the Newsfeed for "An Important AnniversaryOpen in new Window.

From Dave Ryan Author Icon: I made extensive use of it in my first year. Now I just dip in once in a while when I need to check out something.

From Humble Poet PNGravebound- 📓 Author Icon: I've only consulted it twice or thrice my whole time here. I rarely use it, and for the same reason I prefer to stumble over furniture at night rather than use a light. It's obviously best that way because... umm... best because... I'll look it up in Writing.com 101 --- as soon as I grab a flashlight.

Ah, but searching, or stumbling around, can take a lot of time.

From findingfeet Author Icon: Every day.

I may not use it every day, but I do find my way there several times a month.
