A City in Flames

Summer, a time I always enjoyed
This one different and frightening
Starting as usual, but quickly changed
Phone screams off the wall
Told to stay inside
Screaming and sirens all around
I was only seven
My world, penetrated by violence
Where was Dad? Would he ever come home?

Watching and listening hourly
Fear engulfing my soul
Would the riots come here?
Would Dad be ok?
I don't want Dad hurt
Worry entrapped my heart
Relief spreads wide
Dad returns for short time

Dad unseen for many days
Sleepless nights mold
Around empty days, family incomplete
My heart jumps at phone ring
Is he dead? Will he come back?
Elation overshadows fear
Riots conclude, police restore peace
Dad home now, emotions seesaw


Child clings, never to be left alone
I need my Dad to come home safe
Trust lost forever, stress constant companion
Pride that he helped
