My blog and random thoughts |
This is my blog, a space for me to ponder random thoughts and chase down ideas. It will mainly be about my erotica (and possibly erotica I find on the site or in the world) so some of the topics may contain graphic language and concepts some people are uncomfortable reading about. I have no plans for how often I'll post, I have some ideas about what I will post about but my plans are apt to change on a moments notice. If you have slightly voyeuristic tendencies feel free to follow me in silence or you can post comments as the mood takes you. In truth I'm not really expecting anyone to do more than take a quick peek and then move on to better more exciting things. |
In my last post I talked about the fact that I've been writing some frivolous erotica, and I feel I should explain the difference between heavy and frivolous But first we need to discus the difference between pornography and erotica (in the literature world) I've written about it before but lets do the concise version. Pornography is graphic descriptions of sex. Erotica is writing with sex as a theme. Based on those fairly simplified definition, most erotica is pornographic, having a story with sex as a theme but not having sex scenes in it tends to be a bit rubbish. But the term pornography has some negative connotations so authors can get a little upset at having their work referred to as pornography. It's like a Michelin star chef not wanting their creations referred to as grub, it's technically correct but at the same time a little insulting. So what do I consider frivolous erotica? Basically it's where the writing is just an excuse to write sex scenes. Take my Sofia the First erotica fanfiction, it's got a little bit of comedy, some parody around Disney princesses and consensual sex but nothing all that deep. It's basically pornography with a thin layer of erotica. It's fun to write and hopefully fun to read but that's about it. If we compare it to one of the pieces I'm working on which is basically about someone coming to terms with their gender and sexuality, it looks a lot deeper than just sex but as it's erotica clearly sex will feature a lot. Although 5000 words in and so far no clothing has been removed, Sofia the First at that point had two masturbation scenes, she'd walked in on her siblings having sex and the first proper sex scene was underway. Writing the heavy pieces takes considerably more focus than the frivolous pieces, hence the switching to a frivolous one just to break things up. There is another category which I tend not to write. Recently I tried some erotica audio stories, there are a couple of apps available from the google play store for android users. The stories fall into what I consider to be romance with sex scenes, the sex scenes don't really add to the story, in most it tends to be the climax, the story is essentially romance and doesn't go beyond that. For me if the story isn't impacted by the sex scene any more than if it were replaced with "and they had sex" then it's not enough to move it out of the romance genre. You get a similar thing with horror, I feel there is a difference between horror with graphic sex scenes and horrotica (the blend of horror and erotica). So that's how I think of the categories of what I write/read but obviously everyone has their own definitions. Although if we could come together and formalize it then it would make finding something you are interested in much easier. |
Wow it's been a while since I've posted! But I've been writing more recently, so figured I would post. It all started in September when I saw a group for prepping for NaNoWriMo. NaNoWriMo is basically an idea that you write a novel of 50,000 words from scratch in November, I don't know why I'm describing it here on a site where surely everyone knows what NaNoWriMo is. But anyway, back in 2017 I took part in a world building challenge which was designed as prep for NaNoWriMo As my last post shows it stopped with the host just disappearing, I can't remember if I ever found out what happened, but presumably some private life complication. But it was good fun and so when I saw a prep challenge I figured I would give it a go. During the world building challenge I explored a steampunk erotica idea that I had, since then I'd written about 10,000 words of the novel (yes that's an average of about 5 words a day!) obviously it wasn't the only thing I wrote in those 5 years. NaNoWriMo is meant to be writing from scratch but I figured: screw it I'll continue the novel. The prep challenge was good as you get basically daily tasks to come up with character profiles and other fun stuff, some of which I had and some which I'd already thought about but just going over them was nice. It worked on an honour based system where you say which task you did and had to complete one at least every 3 days. Unfortunately, we went away and then due to some other problems I missed the 72hour timer and so was disqualified but continued anyway and completed all the tasks by the end of the month. You get encouraging e-mails and posts in the group so it's quite fun plus I received a number of anonymous donations of points which was nice. Due to completing all the tasks, I was eligible for the NaNoWriMo sprint group which was another fun competition. The idea is that you write in sprints every 4 hours there was a 30 minute official sprint but between them you have 15 minute unofficial sprints, for an official sprint you win points for taking part and bonus points if you wrote the most, for the 15 minute sprints you only got points if enough people joined in. I only did 5 of the 15 minute sprints which earnt me 10 points and then 25 30 minute sprints earning 125 points. There is a points requirement that increases throughout the month so by the end you need 100 points so I comfortably hit the target. I wasn't writing loads, all my points were participation points rather than points for writing the most (again it's all honour based so I'll just assume everyone else exaggerated!). So in total I managed to write 14,012 words which is a little short of the 50,000 you are meant to do but I was never expecting to get close to that. However between sprints I decided to work on something else and managed to write 11,877 words for that plus towards the end I started another novella which was maybe a little crazy. So in total I wrote about 30,000 words in November which isn't bad. It might seem odd that I wrote 3 different pieces rather than focusing on 1, when that is kind of the focus of NaNoWriMo. Basically the steampunk novel is a bit more serious and focusing for the sprints was a bit heavy going so I did some more frivolous writing, I went with a futa supernatural story which is pretty much as frivolous as you can get (apart from maybe when tentacles are involved). So it worked as a nice contrast. The third piece was also firmly in the frivolous category, a fanfiction novella (although maybe little more than a short story) based on Sofia The First Disney cartoon, set in a semi dystopian future where they have grown up. I actually then continued that through December and uploaded it, it is only about 15k so not long but was nice getting something up that is finished. I've also continued with the steam punk novel and it's reached 30k and I expect it to be "finished" at 35-40k so it's getting there. There are a couple of rather complex scenes that are needed which need to explain quite a bit of the plot without it being too "plotty" if that makes sense? I've also started a new piece (as having 3 on the go at a time makes sense) and this one is another serious piece exploring gender identity and sexuality in a kind of coming of age story which is an interesting story to explore, the plan is fairly simple but then I seem to keep getting ideas for side characters and sub plots so who knows what it will end up like. That one is only at 5k so just starting out really. So in the last 2 months I've written about 60k which seems like a lot (considering NaNoWriMo is meant to be 50k in one month maybe it's not). Who knows how long the surge will continue for, and if I'll be able to focus enough to get the steampunk novel to what might be considered a first draft. But it's all exciting |
I've not been on the site in a while, life has just got too busy. So I was expecting to be logging in to find I had a little over a week to complete this months Whole New World entry. Instead I found the Whole New World removed from my favourites, when I checked my email about it it links to an invalid item. The creator appears to have gone AWOL, she hasn't logged in since the beginning of December and looks like here membership has expired which would explain the item being removed. Who knows if she will come back. On the one hand it's a shame as I was enjoying the contest. On the other it pretty much looked like I had no chance of actually submitting a piece on time for the final anyway. What it does highlight is the lack of any kind of forum for the erotica community. Or at least if there is one I'm not aware of it. The unofficial erotica newsletter forum was the place you could go to contact everyone and find out what was going on. Without that it's all a bit lonely. I don't know who else was in the competition. A quick search of whole new world shows up hell of lot. As this wasn't an erotica competition I could hunt round for other people who may be talking about it but that seems a lot of effort. |
So my hope to catch up between Christmas and new year failed, as we were ravaged by flu! Between trying to keep the house tidy and dealing with everyone being sick there was very little time for anything else. I feel like I'm still struggling to tidy up from Christmas, each day we seem to make just as much mess as we tidy. Maybe things are inching their way better, and for the first time I've found time to write a blog entry, so finding some time to progress my work may be possible. The good news is that the Whole New World competition still seems to be on hold so I've got time still. |
Everything was going well, I was actually on target to hit 5000 words in November, then things went to hell, a whole heap of problems at work resulting in me working weekends and evenings. So I stalled at 8224 words meaning I wrote 3048 words last month. This month is now half way through and I've written nothing. But the good news is that we've been given December off creating the new world, and things have possibly calmed down at work, although this weekend may still get a little crazy. Maybe I'll manage to get back on track over Christmas as I'm due a fair amount of vacation. Or I may still be in denial. |
So two thirds of the way through the month and I've written 2389 words, so still well down on my target but over double last month's. The worry is next month is going to be hard with Christmas and all that entails so it will be a struggle. But it's a step in the right direction. |
The third month has started, the novella stands at 5176 so I wrote just under 1000 words which isn't good I figure I need about 25000 words for the novella so I'm about 1/5th of the way through, but 1/3rd of the way through the time which isn't great. But 5000 words a month isn't an unreasonable schedule and to be honest 25000 is a complete guess so it's possible I do it in less. On the other hand my write up to the 2nd month was fairly fast, I wrote 2356 words so over twice the amount that I added to the story. The 3rd month's questions will probably be shorter to answer, the big question in it is about magic and as my story is steampunk it has no magic. Also a lot of the questions are rather similar to the previous month's so a lot of overlap. Still worried I'm not going to make it, but I'll give it my best shot (although spending time writing this entry is just more procrastination) |
So the end of month 1, I've answered all the questions and am making slow progress on the novella, 4320 words to be exact. There are some aspects of steampunk that are difficult, the story has a steampunk tank in it and it's hard to balance describing it versus moving on with the plot. It's also frustrating thinking about some aspects of the world which have no impact on my current story but lead me down ideas for further books in the series, or maybe just other books in the same universe. This is the problem with world building, a world is full of interesting things that divert you from the small section you are writing about. Hopefully I can keep focused and start to make more progress. I've still got 5 months left, so hopefully that's going to be enough to finish it. |

So do I take part in
The alternative is the steampunk piece I've been kind of thinking about but written nothing on. The problem with that is although it is a new world, it's not all that different from our world in terms of the natural world, the geography is different and so is the technology, but a lot of the questions wont be all that interesting, not even sure if steampunk would be allowed, as it's not really sci-fi and the competition/contest/thingy is sci-fi and fantasy. The steam punk one is slightly more achievable in 6 months, as I've got basically an outline for a novella so it's less of a sprawling mess than the fantasy one. Again the GC rating limit may be an issue, the rough plan in my head is for at least 2 novella's in a series, the second will contain some pretty graphic S&M so will need to be rated XGC and I was thinking a couple of scenes in the first could push what would be acceptable for GC. Although in all honesty the distinction between GC and XGC seems woolly The difference is: GC:This item may contain excessive references to sex, drugs, violence, harsh or sexually derived cursing, derogatory names or combination thereof. XGC:This item may contain extreme or obsessive levels of sex, drugs, violence, harsh or sexually derived cursing, derogatory names or combination thereof. So excessive references changes to extreme or obsessive levels, I've no idea what that actually means, does the use of the word "references" mean that even a GC rating can't have a sex scene in it? It can only mention sex but not depict it? Apparently using the word fuck more than once means something has to be at least GC rated which makes the 18+ rating a bit of a joke. Why do Americans fear the word so much? Considering my blog is 18+ I have to remember never to use it again, or do you think I can use it once per entry? I'm going to try out the steampunk idea, and if by the end of the month have made a decent dent in the story I'll sign up using that, if not I may have to give up on the idea entirely. |
