Day to day stuff....a memoir without order. |
Time seems to have slowed to a complete crawl. After the hustle bustle of Christmas, the cabin fever of winter is lasting forever. One day we are given the faint hint of spring, warm breezes, sunshine, then suddenly we are thrown back into the doldrums of overcast, frigid, rain-laden clouds. It's a roller coaster ride of winter/spring with the coaster only trudging uphill. Where is that peak? The Hoggetown Medieval Faire does not even seem inviting this year. This will be its final weekend, but I can't get excited enough to want to go. Too dreary. Writing about the Saleha Huuda murder yesterday brought back memories of the student murders here in 1989 and 1990. Grisly wouldn't describe them and perverted wouldn't describe Danny Rolling. I was actually glad when he was executed. I remember how fearful we all were, putting new locks on everything. We even contemplated getting a guard dog like my son and daughter-in-law did. Policemen came to neighborhood meetings to talk to people about things they could do to make their homes safer. Neighbors looked out for each other, checking on your home for you if you were away and reporting any suspicious activity. That was the only good thing that came out of it all, and now that has sort of dwindled away. We've all gone back into our cocoons, concerned only with ourselves. It's too bad we need a common threat to bring us together like that. I guess that is what is fueling the Egyptians right now. Valentine's Day will be here in ten days. Instead of flowers or candy, Jim and I usually go to the garden center and get a new rose bush to plant. This year I'm looking for a Don Juan. They are great climbers with wonderful smelling velvety red roses that bloom profusely from May through October...and they are very resistant to disease. I'm hoping for a relatively warm fourteenth. until next time.....c |
